Clinical data management course

Clinical data management is the work of designing the forms a trial uses, checking the values that come back, and keeping the database fit to lock.

What clinical data management is

A trial produces the same facts many times: what the volunteer took, what the doctor recorded, and what the lab sent. A case report form, or CRF, is the form those facts are written on. An eCRF is that form on a screen. An annotated CRF shows, next to each field, where the value will sit in the database.

The data management plan says how the data will be collected, cleaned and locked. Edit checks are the rules that flag a missing or impossible value. User acceptance testing is the rehearsal of those checks before the study goes live. When the data are clean enough to analyse, the database is locked.

This is not the same job as clinical SAS programming. Data management collects and cleans. A statistical programmer usually builds analysis datasets after that, often in SAS. PharmaWiz does not list a Clinical SAS course. The data-management course is the published data course.

Roles

A clinical data coordinator tracks forms and answers queries from sites. A data manager writes the plan, the edit checks, and the listings used before lock. Some teams also have a database designer who builds the eCRF and a standards lead who maps fields to a company or CDISC structure.

CDISC, the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium, publishes models such as SDTM that many sponsors ask for. A beginner course may name those models. Building the datasets is often a later, separate skill.

Skills

The skills are form design, a data management plan, edit-check specifications, query text that a site can answer, and a checklist for lock. Attention to detail matters more than software brand names on the first day.

The PharmaWiz clinical data management page lists the data management plan, annotated eCRF and CRF design, edit-check specifications, and user acceptance testing. The mentor named on the page is Mubarak Shaik. The curriculum headings also include database building, data validation, query management, reconciliation, and database lock.

Career path

People often start by entering or cleaning data and raising queries. They then take on edit checks, listings, and a share of the lock. Database build and standards work can come after that, if the person wants the technical side.

The teams sit in sponsor companies and in contract research organisations. The method is used on trials in many countries. A course teaches the method. The employer still decides the tool, which may be a commercial EDC system.

How to start

Learn the parts of a CRF and why a protocol drives every field. Practise writing one edit check in plain language, for example a lab value that cannot be negative. Then read a short data-management plan so the document types are familiar.

PharmaWiz teaches the published courses at KPHB Phase-I, Road No. 1, Kukatpally, Hyderabad, or live on Microsoft Teams. ASCEND, the programme those courses sit inside, is 4 months and 120 hours. The page says the course is for B.Pharm, M.Pharm, Pharm D and life sciences graduates, with a PharmaWiz certificate. Career Startup includes a semester titled Clinical Research and CDM for the years that programme names.

Questions

What is a clinical data management career?

It is work on the forms, checks and database of a clinical trial, from design through to lock. Coordinators, data managers and database designers share that work.

How is clinical data management different from clinical SAS?

Data management collects and cleans trial data. Clinical SAS programming is the later step of building analysis datasets and tables, usually in SAS software. PharmaWiz lists a clinical data management course and does not list a Clinical SAS course.

What does the PharmaWiz page say the course includes?

The data management plan, annotated eCRF and CRF design, edit checks, user acceptance testing, and the steps through database lock. Mubarak Shaik is the mentor named there.

Where can I take this course?

At the PharmaWiz classroom in KPHB, Hyderabad, or live on Microsoft Teams, inside ASCEND.
