Materiovigilance course

Materiovigilance is the monitoring of medical devices after they are made available: complaints, malfunctions, and injuries, and the reports a regulator expects.

What materiovigilance is

Pharmacovigilance watches medicines. Materiovigilance watches medical devices: a bandage, a pump, an implant, or diagnostic equipment, depending on how the law classifies them. A complaint may be a malfunction, a use error, or a harm. Not every complaint is reportable. The decision uses the device, the event, and the rule of that regulator.

Countries classify devices by risk. The PharmaWiz curriculum describes US FDA classes, EU classes under the medical device regulation, and India classes A to D. It names CDSCO and the Materiovigilance Programme of India, MvPI, alongside FDA and notified bodies. Those names are on the course page. The class of a real device still depends on its intended use and the rulebook in force.

Roles

A complaint handler logs what the customer or the hospital reported, asks for missing facts, and decides whether the event meets a reporting rule. An investigator looks at the device when it is returned. A regulatory reporter submits the form the authority requires. CAPA, corrective and preventive action, is the quality step when a cause should be removed.

The work sits in device manufacturers and in firms that handle complaints for them. It is related to pharmacovigilance, and the case discipline is similar, but the forms, the identifiers and the clocks are the device rules, not the medicine rules.

Skills

People learn the definition of a medical device, the complaint process, unique device identification, and how a reportability decision is written down. The PharmaWiz page lists five modules: medical device foundations, complaint handling and investigation, decision making and CAPA, regulatory reporting, and devices, complaints and assessment. The curriculum summary on the page says 15 hours, 14 topics, 5 modules, plus an assessment and a mock interview.

Topics named on the page include UDI, good faith effort, the global decision tree, MDR and MIR submissions, and the FDA MAUDE database. Shreerama Jagannadha is the mentor named on the page. The certificate line is a PharmaWiz certificate.

Career path

A common start is complaint intake. Reportability decisions, investigations and CAPA writing come with experience. Some people move between device safety and drug safety because the case habit transfers. The regulations do not.

This subject is global. A company that sells a device in more than one region files more than one kind of report. A course can show the map. The employer's procedures say which clock applies to which event.

How to start

Learn the difference between a medicine and a device, and read the risk classes in one regulation until the examples make sense. Then follow one complaint from intake to a reportability decision on a sample the class provides.

PharmaWiz teaches the published courses at KPHB Phase-I, Road No. 1, Kukatpally, Hyderabad, or live on Microsoft Teams. ASCEND, the programme those courses sit inside, is 4 months and 120 hours. The materiovigilance page says the course is for B.Pharm, M.Pharm, Pharm D and life sciences graduates. The 15-hour line is the curriculum summary for this subject, inside the longer ASCEND programme.

Questions

What is materiovigilance?

It is the monitoring of medical-device safety after the device is available: complaints, malfunctions and injuries, and the reports regulators require.

How is it different from pharmacovigilance?

Pharmacovigilance is about medicines. Materiovigilance is about devices. Both use individual reports and a decision about what must be sent to an authority. The forms and the rules are not the same.

What does the PharmaWiz materiovigilance page list?

Five modules: device foundations, complaint handling, CAPA, regulatory reporting, and an assessment with a mock interview. The page summary says 15 hours and 14 topics. Shreerama Jagannadha is the mentor named there.

Where is the class?

KPHB, Kukatpally, Hyderabad, or live on Microsoft Teams, as part of ASCEND.
