Clinical SAS

Clinical SAS is the use of SAS software to organise and analyse clinical-trial data. This page explains that work. PharmaWiz does not list a Clinical SAS course.

What clinical SAS is

SAS is a software suite used to manage and analyse data. In clinical trials, programmers use it to turn the raw data from a locked database into datasets an analysis can use, and into the tables, listings and figures that go in a report.

Two models you will see named in job descriptions are SDTM and ADaM, published by CDISC. SDTM is a structure for tabulating study data. ADaM is a structure for analysis data. Companies also keep their own standards. Learning the software and learning those models are both part of the skill, and they are not the same afternoon.

Roles

A clinical SAS programmer, sometimes titled statistical programmer, writes and validates programs. A lead programmer reviews them and agrees the shells of the tables with the statistician. The statistician designs the analysis. The programmer builds it in code.

This role usually sits in a biostatistics or statistical-programming group at a sponsor or a contract research organisation. It is not the site coordinator role, and it is not the drug-safety case-processing role.

Skills

People learn the SAS data step, procedures that summarise data, and macros that repeat a program across visits or labs. They learn to validate another person's program by writing an independent one. They also need enough clinical vocabulary to know what a visit, a lab unit, or a treatment emergent flag means.

None of that is claimed as a PharmaWiz syllabus. The site does not publish a Clinical SAS course, a SAS module list, or a SAS mentor.

How this differs from clinical data management

Clinical data management designs the CRF, cleans the data, and locks the database. Clinical SAS programming usually starts from that locked data and builds the analysis files. The two groups hand work to each other. They are trained differently.

The closest course PharmaWiz publishes is clinical data management. That page lists the data management plan, annotated eCRF and CRF design, edit checks, user acceptance testing, and database lock. It does not list SAS programming. If you want the data course, start there. If you want to ask the team whether any batch covers programming, use the enquiry form and say so. This page cannot answer that for them.

How to start

A pharmacy or life-sciences degree gives you the medical words. The programming still has to be learned: Base SAS first, then the clinical data structures your target employers use. Public CDISC guides describe SDTM and ADaM. Practise on a small dummy dataset before you call yourself a programmer.

For the published PharmaWiz path into trial data, read the clinical data management course. For drug-safety case work, read the pharmacovigilance course. Neither page is a SAS course.

Questions

What is clinical SAS?

It is programming in SAS software for clinical-trial data: analysis datasets, and the tables, listings and figures in a study report. SDTM and ADaM are common structures for that data.

Does PharmaWiz have a Clinical SAS course?

No. The site does not list a Clinical SAS course. The published data course is clinical data management, which covers forms, edit checks and database lock.

Is clinical SAS the same as clinical data management?

No. Data management collects and cleans the trial database. SAS programmers usually build the analysis datasets after the database is locked.

How do I ask PharmaWiz which class fits?

Use the enquiry form and name clinical data management, or say you are asking about programming. The team can say which batch is open. This guide does not add a SAS batch.
